Well, here we are, the hype machine building momentum toward the Gears of War 2 launch is over and done with! The review scores have rolled in, garnering a Metacritic score of 93. Not too shabby! Only a point lower than the original Gears of War (94), we’re looking at a reception on par with the original, which considering the freshness that the original Gears provided, is definitely saying something.

You may recall we talked about the Gears of War 2 Midnight Launch Events last time. Well we found a video of one of these Gears of War 2 release day parties, check it out:

Also, reports on Gears of War 2’s week one sales have rolled in. According to VGCharts.com, Gears of War 2 launched in the number one spot (no surprise there). But it went way beyond that, easily topping 2 million sales in its first few days, and beating out Sony’s triple-A contender Resistance 2 by a HUGE margin, with Resistance 2 pulling a comparatively paltry 304,958. Now, one thing you have to consider is that Gears of War 2 came out 3 days later, so it came out that far ahead despite Resistance 2 having a several day head start!

Finally, we’ve caught word that someone pulled off Gears Of War 2: Horde Wave 50 Completed On Insane. Gearheadsofwar.com has posted their proof, stating “We started from Wave 1 on the ‘Day One’ map and whittled away at this for about three days. The dirty, dirty Horde didn’t stand a damn chance! Forget about throwing the kitchen sink at us, the Locusts threw the damn house! We have it all on film, baby!” Congrats guys, supposedly you’re more hardcore than Epic’s own testers!

While the official release date is 11/07/08 for Gears of War 2, that of course means that technically the date is reached at midnight tonight!

Gaming bits has reported on the Gears of War 2 Developer Midnight Launch Events. There are major parties going down in Los Angeles, New York, Bellvue, and London. On top of that many major chains such as Best Buy are running their own late night offerings. Check around for a shop near you offering 12:01am sales for tonight’s Gears of War 2 release date

Second up we’ve got the first ten minutes of Gears of War 2 leaked on video. This was captured by GameTrailers!

Last up, there’s an interesting note on GameCherry that “Epic Gets Creative With GOW2 Resales”. Apparently, there are five multiplayer maps from the original Gears of War, now updated to fit into the new Gears of War 2 gameplay, that can only be installed once onto your Xbox 360 hard drive. The purpose of this is to combat used sales of the game, since there’s no way to access these classic Gears of War maps if you buy a used copy. Pretty clever…

We know you’ll be busy playing Gears of War 2, but check back for more Gears of War 2 cheats, rumors and news, because you’ll want to learn everything you can to get the most out of the game!

Nothing can stop the Gears of War 2 from turning toward the looming launch, and still all kinds of GOW 2 news and rumors keep cropping up!

Let’s start things off with a report on What Multiplayer feels like in Gears of War 2.  “There is no more sticking to walls, players can wall bounce but again it’s not as fast enough. They can also break out of their slide before going into cover, the party system very similar to Halo games made by Bungie.” So says Gameguru.in, in a slightly confusing wording. It sounds like players that are afraid of change. We’re betting the tweaks are designed for better balance and playability, but we’ll just have to see when the Gears of War 2 release date hits…

Gears of War 2

Second up is what’s being called Gears of War 2 Spoilers (Sort of). Chris Buffa of GameDaily writes: “What Microsoft doesn’t want you to know about its big, bad sequel.” Feel free to go check it out, but you’ve been warned, you may see stuff (like Gears of War 2 weapons) you don’t want spoiled! There are also shots of Gears of War 2 characters, which may give hints to the Gears of War 2 story as well!

Last up, we’ve got words we’ve not been wanting to hear at all: CliffyB - Gears of War 2 “definitely not” Coming to PC. N4G writes:  “Gameplayer spoke with Gears of War 2 lead designer CliffyB today and unearthed the info that unlike the original, there is no way the sequel will come to PC. He also mentions its dismal PS3 potential.” Ugh, not the Gears of War 2 news we’ve been hoping for. At least we’ve got the Gears of War 2 movie, and eventually Gears of War 3 to look forward to!

Once again we’ve rounded up all the best Gears of War 2 news and rumors from around the internet.

First things first: we’ve got news of a cheap Gears of War 2 Limited Edition. GameXtract had this to say: “I like getting my video games cheaper. Especially when I don’t have to wait for three months till everyone else doesn’t give a dam about the game. It looks like ToysRus is trying to get an upper hand on pre-orders this year with GOW 2. The limited edition is listed on the site for $59.99 instead of the regular $69.99 found at many other retailers.” How about that? Now you can get the extra Gears of War 2 toys for essentially free! Not a bad deal…

Gears of War 2

Second on our list are the Leaked multiplayer Gears of War 2 screenshots. According to Split-screen: “In order to refrain from spoilers another little piggy sent us the list of multiplayer maps and a couple of snaps, in case you are one of those who loves whispering Marcus Fenix into someone’s ears then its time to get those chainsaw’s outta here.” The Gears of War 2 screens aren’t exactly hi-res, as they appear to be pictures someone took with their camera of the game playing on a TV. Oh well, we guess it’s better than nothing…

Finally, we’ve got the encouraging words from Epic themselves (via CVG): “After two years of pouring our heart and passion into Gears of War 2, the team is immensely happy with what we’ve created,” said design director Cliff Bleszinski. “This is Epic’s best work yet, and we can’t wait to see the response from fans and newcomers to the series alike.” Also of note is that the game is finished and ready to hit stores! Too bad there are still a few weeks before we can actually get our hands on it.

The week in Gears of War 2 news

September 23, 2008

There are a few juicy bits that we’ve scavenged from our favorite source for Gears of War 2 news and rumors.

First off, there’s the Gears of War 2 Experience: E-Day Emergency Call. Microsoft Game Studios has launched a clever marketing gimmick that allows you to call a toll-free number and leave a message as “a terrified Seran on Emergence Day.” The number is 1-800-598-6379. According to teamxbox.com: “Get your friends to help and let loose. Remember, it’s E-Day, so nobody’s seen a Locust or heard of Delta Squad before. And bonus points for keeping the language fairly clean. We will immortalize the best five entries on our site.” There are also some rules you’ll have to agree to, so check out the official post. Looks like it’s time to practice your acting chops and see if you can play the part of one of the GOW 2 soldiers!

Gears of War 2

Next up we’ve got the rather silly Gears of War 2 Limited Edition Energy Drink. According to ButtonMasher.com: “Microsoft and Demon Energy Drink are teaming up to run a promotion at the Gears of War 2 launch. The promo will include limited edition Demon Energy Drink cans and bottles as well as a competition to win the first copies of Gears of War 2 in the world.” Is it really necessary to chug down caffeine-impregnated soda to appreciate Gears of War Two? Hmm… seems like if you’re trying to be a Gears of War 2 sniper, all that caffeine might make your aim a bit less steady!

If you’re in the UK you’ll have the opportunity to for a special deal: Gears 2 and replica gold lancer for £129. According to Xbox360Fanboy.com, “Not to be confused with the Gears of War 2 in-game gold plated Lancer, UK retailer gamestation is offering diehard fans the chance to own a replica gold painted Gears Lancer. The same toy Lancer that’s available exclusively on Amazon.com, but with a fancy gold paint scheme. If you’re interested in owning one of these bundles, you better start saving up already. The Gears of War 2 gold plated Lancer bundle (collector’s edition plus Lancer) will set you back a hefty £129.” Talk about the cream of the gold-plated crop of Gears of War 2 toys! Even if you can’t get a hold of the gold lancer, there’s still the regular replica. And we’ve heard there are some really useful things that you can do with it.

That’s it for this week! Check back soon for more Gears of War 2 rumors and news!
